CROSSBREEDS

It is all good and well to enjoy stud breeding, ultimately however the backbone of the Australian beef industry is not made up out of stud breeding but out of viable crossbreeds. Traditionally the British breeds played an important part in the beef industry in Australia. History now tells us that the larger portions of northern Queensland and the Northern Territory have moved away from the British breeds in favour of the Brahman and the Brahman crossbreeds because of the harsh climate and the ability to survive in that climate.

This is the challenge that we are trying to meet, to breed region specific animals and in particular that large portion of dry area bovines in the Northern Territory and Queensland.

The Brahmins are animals that have gained a reputation for toughness and sustainability however it is not a secret that they continue to experience fertility problems unless they put on improved pastures which cannot always be sustained.

This is our challenge and with the three breeds that we have chosen, the Speckle Park, the Brangus and Nguni, we believe that we are on a path to a solution. The Speckle Park in our view is the quintessential cross breed, bringing girth and marbling, and moderate size to any breed.

The Nguni brings a special brand of traits to the cross-breeding arena, hardiness, disease resistant, heat and light tolerant with one of the highest fertility rates for bovines on the planet, conversion rates of unimproved pastures into huge carcasses and because of the structure a phenomenal meat yield.

The Brangus has a carcass like no other, consistently thick and deep having garnered some of the Brahman characteristics it will join this trio of animals to fetch exceptional yields.

We concede that this is a new venture of uncertain destination however we will be measuring, weighing recording and it would be exciting to have you come along this journey with us.

MA’WESISWE – MOTHER OF THE NATION

In 2021 our first Speckle Park Brangus cross will be born in October 21, we are very excited about this.

Our first Speckle Park Nguni calf was born in September, approximately 35% heavier than its purebred siblings, with a phenomenal but hardy muscle structure, data collection has begun.

In 2021 our first Speckle Park Brangus cross was born on October 21, we were very excited about this and greatly looking forward to seeing more of these.

SPECKLE PARK CROSSBREEDS

Our herd features premium breeding stock with high-end genetic profiles. We have teamed up with innovative thinking partners such as AgPro to ensure that our pastures can sustain what we envisage for our high-end genetic breeding program.

We aim to harness that knowledge and experience to develop breeds that can serve Australia’s differing environmental conditions.

Our principal herd is Speckle Park, we have chosen this breed for is exceptional versatility and for what it brings to any carcass.

Brangus CROSSBREEDS

We were introduced to Brangus, through Peter and Roz Alexander of Hidden Valley Stud and are very impressed with their carcass yield. As such, we have started an elite and select Brangus program to take advantage of those features. We have commenced discussions with Telpara Hills Brangus. The Brangus genetics we are breeding with are exclusively high end but the prospect of a Brangus-Speckle cross raises some very interesting prospects.

We also have started a program with Brangus.

The sheer volume of carcass of these animals is impressive. By crossbreeding Speckle Park with Brangus cattle we hope to produce a record carcass yield with exceptional marbling and palatability. We are expecting our first Speckle Brangus cross in September 2021 and our first homegrown purebreds in 2022.

Nguni CROSSBREEDS

We are very excited to start our Nguni program. These bovines are a collection of ancient hardy breeds that originated in 1600BC.

By crossbreeding Speckle Park with Nguni cattle we can borrow from their dry area hardiness, disease resistance, heat and light resistance and create larger softer carcasses.

That said, you cannot produce a superior crossbreed without the top-end genetics of a purebred herd

Traditionally professional people, our family have immensely enjoyed the challenges of our farming operation. We have survived droughts, fires and floods still mother nature has cast some pearls our way. We realised that cattle are region-specific and have naturally been attracted to African Sangha cattle with their amazing ability to survive and flourish in dry areas. We reached out to Gawie Roux the current chairman of the Nguni Association and have started a program with him to breed a quintessential “dry region” animal.  We are pursuing a purebred stud and we also intend these to be crossed with our Speckles to achieve the best of both Breeds.
